SISSALA E: 5 member committee inaugurates to investigate Tumu disturbances

The Upper West Regional Minister, Alhaji Alhassan Sulemani has described the recent disturbances leading to the death of two persons as black spots in the history of the Upper West Region.

The minister made the remarks when he inaugurated a 5 member committee to investigate the disturbances in Tumu of the Sissala East Municipality.
One person has been shot dead in Tumu in the Upper West Region following a confrontation between some angry youth in the town and police officers.

The dead, believed to be a 17-year-old boy was said to be part of an angry mob that attacked the Police Station on Friday.
The confrontation was said to have been caused by an earlier raid on the ghetto of some youth suspected to be weed smokers by the Police on Thursday.
One of the alleged wee smokers, Kanwei Hanidu, 21, during the raid threw himself into the Tumu Dam in an attempt to outwit the police officers.
He was however drowned in the dam since he could not swim.
The body of Kanway Hanidu was later retrieved by the youth who decided to storm the police station to register their anger.

The 5 member committee has been given 14 working days starting from 28th May, 2018 to investigate;
• the immediate and remote causes of the disturbances,
• to assess the professional conduct of the Tumu Police and SWAT Team in the disturbances,
• to ascertain the conduct of citizens in Tumu especially the youth in the incident,
• to assess the extent of property destroyed in the course of the disturbances,
• to examine any other matter relevant to the incident and to finally make available recommendations to address matters arising from the disturbances and to avert similar incident in the future.
The committee members include; Mr. Adams Tauphic from the district Youth Authority, Mr. Braimah Razak Luriwie a representative from the Sissala East Municipal Assembly, Kuoro Mohammed Zakaria from the Tumu Traditional Council, Baah Forson Agyepong the Wa Circuit Court Judge and Danjumah Emmanuel from the regional Peace Council.

Alhaji A. Alhassan a deputy director at the Upper West Regional Coordinating Council will serve as the committee secretary but not a member
The chairman of the committee, His Lordship Baah Forson Agyepong promised the Regional Security Council and the minister of a good job.
